Illegal construction at Shui Mong Tin, Ma Shi Chau
Ma Shi Chau is the Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) since 1982 and in 1999, was designated as Special Area. In Nov 2009, it has also become one of the geological sites of Hong Kong National Geopark. It is a rare outdoor geological classroom in Hong Kong exhibiting numerous geological features. In Sep 2008 AGHK noticed the excavation of land at Shui Mong Tin, Ma Shi Chau and suspected there was unauthorized development. Since then, our Association has closely monitored the development; discussed with the developer, the village head and Lands Department; reported and followed up with those related Government Departments. Unfortunately, due to the incompetence of the Government Departments and existing grey areas of the legislation, Shui Mong Tin was turned into a cemetery for urns niches.
