Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark

A UNESCO global geopark is a unique natural area with special geological significance integrating natural and cultural landscapes,  serving the three main objectives of conservation, education and sustainable development.

Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark, located in the eastern part of Hong Kong, is a single entity with clear boundary extending from northeast New Territories to the Sai Kung area. It is holistically managed by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department with the support of local communities and other geopark stakeholders. It is legally protected by the Country Parks Ordinance, Marine Parks Ordinance and other ordinances. Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark is oriented to nature conservation and education. It is divided into three protection areas with different levels of protection: Core Protection Area, Special Protection Area and Integrated Protection Area. Any unnecessary facilities that could have a negative impact on the environment are not allowed.
